Eugenol found to be effective against triple negative breast cancer

A study from King Saud University and Cairo University showed that eugenol has potential use as a natural remedy against breast cancer. This was based on the potent anti-metastatic and anti-proliferative effects exhibited by eugenol against in vitro human triple negative breast cancer cells, and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2- (HER2) positive breast cancer cells.

• Breast cancer can be further classified into different subtypes based on biological characteristics or gene expression patterns. Specific subtypes, including triple negative breast cancer and HER2-positive breast cancer, are known for their aggressive behavior.
• Triple-negative breast cancer is characterized by the lack of progesterone receptor (PR), estrogen receptor (ER), and HER2. The absence of these receptors makes it more difficult to target compared to other types of breast cancer, which is why there are limited treatments for it.
• Eugenol, commonly found in honey and essential oils aromatic spices, is widely used for its antiseptic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties.
• This phenolic compound is also beneficial against colon, liver, prostate, and breast cancer. It works by preventing cancer cell growth, triggering cell death, and inhibiting the formation of new blood vessels.
• In this study, the researchers determined the in vitro effects of eugenol on the proliferation, metastasis, and apoptosis of triple negative and HER2-positive breast cancer cell lines.
• The results showed that eugenol can inhibit the growth and metastasis of triple-negative and HER2-positive breast cancer cells.

From these results, the researchers concluded that eugenol can be used as a remedy for triple negative and HER2-positive breast cancer.
